Lipiflow

Dry eyes are one of the most common conditions that can affect our eyes and is estimated to affect millions of Americans. Dry eyes occur when tear film becomes compromised, failing to provide enough natural lubrication for the eyes to be comfortable and healthy. Inflammation of the eyelids and obstruction of the oil-producing meibomian glands leads to a diagnosis of Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD). In MGD, these glands become blocked, preventing them from secreting lipids onto the tear film while blinking and leading to dry eye symptoms. This can become further complicated by meibomian gland atrophy due to lack of use. Lipiflow is a procedure that addresses the cause of these symptoms, rather than masking them.
 

What is Lipiflow?

Lipiflow is a technological solution that addresses the underlying cause of your dry eyes, rather than simply treating the symptoms. It is most effective at helping patients whose dry eyes are caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. The meibomian glands can become less productive, or in some cases, even blocked by hardened oil deposits. This prevents the oil from reaching your tear film, making it less effective. Lipiflow targets the meibomian glands, warming them to break down oily blockages and then removing the obstructions pulsation.
