A “pink eye” is often associated with an eye infection but from a clinical standpoint it doesn't provide any further information other than the eye being “pink.”
A red eye can be due to eye infections, commonly caused by bacteria and viruses, inflammation, allergens, dryness, or contact lens wear. It's often a knee-jerk reaction for urgent care facilities and primary care providers to prescribe antibiotics, but these aren't always indicated and has helped lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
If you are experiencing eye redness, discharge, discomfort, and/or light sensitivity, contact our office to determine the cause of these symptoms. We offer same day appointments and after-hours service.
The main source of eye infections is hand-to-eye contact. You can reduce this risk by:
Washing your hands with soap and water before inserting and removing contact lenses
Cleaning the eyelids with shampoo when showering
Avoid touching your eyes otherwise
